Green Initiatives

At Carlingwood Shopping Centre we believe that “green” is not just a colour but rather a responsibility for each and every person to help keep our environment clean.

We are located in the west end just minutes away from the beautiful Ottawa River and the numerous bike paths that surround our Nation’s Capital. Carlingwood Shopping Centre, its owners and management team believe that it is our responsibility to run the shopping centre in the most eco-friendly way possible as we work to help sustain our environment.

  Green Initiatives

  • BOMA Best Certified Gold
  • LED lights being phased in throughout property.
  • Common Area HVAC units replaced with new high efficiency units.
  • Installation of a new BAS system to ensure equipment and lighting operate more efficiently.

Carlingwood Staff and Management have been promoting the Go Green philosophy for many years and we have currently been awarded with the BOMA Best Certified Gold designation. The following Green Initiatives have been ongoing:

  • Waste Audits done annually in order to track diversion rates and look at new ways to reduce waste.
  • Recycling stations added throughout the mall with a tenant campaign to increase knowledge in an effort to increasing the tenant’s recycling efforts.
  • Using contractors who are also environmentally conscious.
  • Low flow urinals, toilets and water faucets have been replaced in all common area fixtures to help conserve water consumption.
  • Regular grease trap cleaning by management allows grease to be recycled through “Leftovers to Lights” which is at the leading edge of a new movement - using organic waste to generate green renewable energy.

 #ACTFORBEES

Earth Day 2016 was a great opportunity for Carlingwood to demonstrate its involvement in saving our planet. We act in our everyday operations, by doing for example recycling and compost, but this time we wanted to push our actions further and have a bigger impact.

We gave ourselves the mission to ACT-Always Consider Tomorrow- for bees. By doing research, we saw that there are many things we all can do to help Bees. Education and planting flowers were two of the many ways we could do our part.

Inviting customers to make a pledge to help bees we provided them with information about the Bee issue and provided ideas on how to save them. Customers wrote their pledge on erasable boards and took selfies that they  hashtagged #ACTforBees on their Instagram or Twitter posts. By doing it they would help spread the word and educate about this issue. In exchange for their pledge they received a free seeds from the Loblaws Garden Centre.
